Precision Plate Edge Preparation
In massive heavy-duty structures—such as pressure vessels, offshore jack-up legs, and dump bodies—plates measuring up to 150mm thick cannot simply be butt-welded together. They require precisely calculated angular profiles milled or cut into their edges to allow Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) beads to penetrate the full thickness of the metal joint.
At Openex, we employ both automated high-speed thermal beveling and mechanical CNC edge milling machines. This allows us to profile flawlessly clean V, X, K, and J-grooves on extraordinarily long or heavy plates, completely eliminating the need for slow, manual grinding, and guaranteeing total compliance with rigorous ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1 weld preparation codes.
Beveling Capabilities
CNC Edge Milling (Cold Beveling)
For complex materials like Duplex stainless steels and high-carbon alloys, applying cutting heat can alter the material's properties (creating a Heat Affected Zone - HAZ). Our CNC edge millers mechanically sheer off metal ribbons in a cold process.
- ✔ Leaves zero Heat Affected Zone (HAZ)
- ✔ Perfect for highly precise U-groove and J-groove specs
- ✔ Unrivaled surface finish (machined quality) ready for welding
3D Plasma & Oxy-Fuel Profiling
We process massive carbon steel plates efficiently by executing cutting and edge beveling simultaneously using our 5-axis robotic gantry systems. This dramatically reduces material handling time on components that will ultimately end up rolled or bent.
- ✔ Multi-torch setups for simultaneous X and Y cuts
- ✔ High-speed profiling of structural carbon steel plates
- ✔ Dynamic bevel angles programmed directly from CAD/CAM
Standard Supported Edge Grooves
Proper groove selection dictates the total volume of weld filler metal required and limits component distortion. Openex cuts and machines to your exact AWS-compliant blueprints.
| Bevel Profile | Common Application | Capability Details |
|---|---|---|
| V V-Groove | General weld penetration. | Beveled mostly via high-speed thermal plasma profiling for plate joining. |
| X Double-V (X) | Plates above 20mm. | Welded from both sides. Dramatically limits plate thermal distortion compared to single V. |
| K K & Y Grooves | Thick T-joints. | Perfectly managed via our CNC automated beveling carriages on massive bridge beams or machinery frames. |
| J U & J-Grooves | Thick Pressure Vessels. | Executed solely on our mechanical CNC Edge Millers. Greatly reduces necessary filler wire deposition volume compared to extreme-depth V-Grooves. |
