Large Part Machining

Machining on a Massive Scale

Precision Machining for Heavy & Oversized Components

Large part machining presents a unique set of challenges that few facilities globally are equipped to handle. At Openex, we excel in the precision machining of oversized and heavy components, especially colossal weldments and cast bases that require precision post-fabrication milling and boring.

The sheer scale of these components demands not only large CNC travels but expert heavy-lift rigging, meticulous bed-setup, and advanced laser metrology. We continuously machine parts weighing up to 250 tons—such as industrial machine beds, power generation turbine housings, and large structural bridge nodes—ensuring critical surfaces are perfectly flat, parallel, and positioned with absolute accuracy.

Our Large-Part Machining Sequence

1 Heavy Workpiece Handling

Utilizing our 55 overhead gantry cranes, our team expertly rigs and positions massive, multi-ton fabrications directly onto our CNC machine beds for highly secure and stable setup.

2 Gantry & Boring Mills

Our ultra-rigid 25-meter CNC gantry mills and floor-type horizontal borers perform heavy-duty continuous milling, tapping, and deep boring across vast exterior and interior surfaces.

3 Large-Scale Metrology

Because parts exceed traditional CMM scales, we utilize Faro Laser Trackers and Zeiss arms for dynamic in-process verification directly on the machine bed to guarantee print alignment.

4 Final Assembly Hub

Before leaving our 180-acre site, machined sub-components enter our integration bay where they are paint-finished, pressure-tested, and fully mechanically assembled.
