Custom Machine Beds

Heavy Machine Bed Fabrication & Planer Milling

The machine bed is the absolute anchor of any heavy-duty machine tool. Whether it is supporting a 5-axis CNC gantry mill, a massive turning lathe, or a heavy stamping press, the bed must provide extreme rigidity, superior vibration dampening, and flawless dimensional stability over its entire lifespan.

At Openex, we act as the premier contract manufacturing partner for global OEMs. We fabricate, stress-relieve, and precision-machine massive steel weldment machine beds weighing up to 250 tons. Our facility is equipped with some of the largest CNC gantry mills in the world, allowing us to machine linear guide rail mounting surfaces to exceptionally tight tolerances over spans of 20+ meters.

How We Guarantee Dimensional Stability

A machine bed is only as good as its stability. If a bed warps after machining, the entire CNC machine is compromised. Here is our strict manufacturing protocol to prevent deformation:

1
Heavy Ribbing & Structural Welding

Using heavy carbon steel plates, we construct the bed with complex internal ribbing to dampen vibrations. Our AWS-certified welders use Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) to lay massive, defect-free full-penetration welds.

2
Thermal Stress Relief (Critical Step)

The intense heat of structural welding traps massive stresses inside the steel. Before any machining takes place, the entire machine bed is placed into our giant on-site annealing furnace. This post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) permanently sets the metal, ensuring it will never warp during its operational life.

3
Large-Scale Precision Machining

Once stress-relieved, the bed is moved to our heavy gantry CNC milling centers. We perform highly precise planer milling to cut the mounting pads, T-slots, and linear guide rail surfaces, achieving absolute flatness and parallelism across massive spans.
