Titanium Machining

Large-Scale Precision Titanium Machining

Titanium offers an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, ultimate corrosion resistance, and high-temperature stability, making it the premier material for the aerospace, defense, offshore, and chemical processing industries.

However, titanium is notoriously difficult to machine. Its low thermal conductivity means heat is concentrated on the cutting tool rather than dissipating into the chips. At Openex, we have conquered the challenges of machining massive titanium forgings, castings, and weldments. Our heavy CNC centers provide the immense rigidity, high-pressure coolant systems, and precise thermal control required to prevent tool chatter and achieve mirror-finish tolerances on large-scale titanium components.

Why Trust Openex with Exotic Metals?

  • Massive Rigidity: Our 5-axis gantry mills and large horizontal boring mills eliminate vibrations during the machining of tough titanium alloys.
  • Advanced Tooling: We utilize specialized carbide tools and strict speed/feed protocols to prevent work hardening and surface tearing.
  • Zero Cross-Contamination: Strict facility protocols isolate our titanium machining areas to prevent iron contamination from carbon steel.

Titanium Grades We Process

We work with fully certified, aerospace- and medical-grade titanium materials, supported by complete Material Test Reports (MTRs) to ensure 100% traceability.

  • Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) The "workhorse" of titanium alloys. Widely used for aerospace bulkheads, turbine housings, and high-performance automotive parts.
  • Grade 2 (CP Titanium) Commercially Pure (CP) titanium offering exceptional corrosion resistance. Ideal for subsea pressure housings and chemical reactor shells.
  • Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) Extra Low Interstitial. Higher purity, highly biocompatible material frequently used in large-scale medical device manufacturing.
  • Grade 7 Contains Palladium for superior resistance to reducing acids. Machined for critical components in aggressive chemical environments.
